How to install Ruby for OpenVMS.
Note: System administrator privileges may be required for installation.
Ruby for VMS has been tested on OpenVMS Alpha V7.3-1 and V7.3-2. OpenVMS/Japanese is not mandatory. You can check the version number of OpenVMS using the following procedure:
$ SHOW SYSTEM/NOPROCESS OpenVMS V7.3-1 on node HATENA 6-AUG-2004 15:23:46.58 Uptime 21 21:54:13
Download and unzip the software kit (ruby-vms-x181x014.zip). PCSI kit 'DLS-AXPVMS-RUBY-X0108-1X014-1.PCSI' will be extracted.
You can get unzip for OpenVMS from the OpenVMS Freeware page or the OpenVMS Freeware CD.

Ruby is easy to install with the PRODUCT INSTALL command.
$ PRODUCT INSTALL */SOURCE=dev:[dir] The following product has been selected: DLS AXPVMS RUBY X1.8-1X014 Layered Product Do you want to continue? [YES] YES Configuration phase starting ... You will be asked to choose options, if any, for each selected product and for any products that may be installed to satisfy software dependency requirements. Execute SYS$STARTUP:RUBY_STARTUP.COM to define logical names. (In the current release, this procedure is not executed automatically.)
Then the RUBY command will be registerd to the command table (DCLTABLES.EXE). You may reread the command table with the SET COMMAND command.
$ @SYS$STARTUP:RUBY_STARTUP.COM $ SET COMMAND/TABLE=SYS$SHARE:DCLTABLES.EXE
Add a line to execute this command procedure into SYS$STARTUP:STARTUP_VMS.COM.
You can verify that Ruby for OpenVMS has been installed successfully with following commands:
$ ruby -v ruby 1.8.1 (2003-12-25) [alpha-vms] $ ruby -e "puts 'hello, world.'" hello, world. $
